AEW Power Rankings: Week of January 15, 2020
Tag Team Division
No. 1 — SCU (last week:1)
SCU had a week to relax as they waited to find out which team would face them for their tag team titles next week.
No. 2 — Hangman Page/Kenny Omega (last week: 3)
Page and Omega have been one of the hottest tag teams as of late. They earned themselves a spot in a match to determine the No.1 contenders for the tag team titles. Out of habit, The Elite worked together throughout the match. When Nick tagged Omega instead of Page, it seemed to bother him as he watched them in the ring. Page decided to get involved and help Omega. Later, the Bucks set up the Meltzer driver when Page tagged himself in. Page and Omega hit their Buckshot Lariat/V-Trigger combo for the win.
Later in the night, a drunk Page told SCU they’d kick their a—s next week. Omega tried to smooth things over and said it would be a “Gentleman’s match” when Page reiterated that they’d kick their a—s.
No. 3—Young Bucks (last week: unranked)
The Young Bucks were on a roll for much of the tag team No. 1 contenders match. When Matt noticeably chose to tag in Omega over Page, that would be their undoing. After doing most of the work and seemingly closing in on a win, Page tagged himself in and Matt was not happy. Before he could do anything, Page and Omega won and cost them their spot.
No. 4—Best Friends with Orange Cassidy (last week: 6)
This trio is one of the hottest things going in AEW. TRENT started off the match with Nick Jackson. Chuckie T hit standing a Sliced Bread on Matt Jackson before a sole food and half-and-half combo with TRENT. TRENT superplexed Matt onto the competitors outside of the ring. When all 8 men attempted a suplex, Cassidy got involved and helped his friends in completing the suplex. Best Friends hit Omega with a Storm Zero, but to no avail. TRENT was pinned by Omega and Page.
No. 5—Santana & Ortiz (last week: unranked)
This was the first match for Proud & Powerful in 2020. They started off by illegally entering the match to beat up Omega and Matt Jackson. This backfired when the Elite teamed up against them. Finding a different approach, Santana & Ortiz went the divide and conquer route with all the teams. The fans were impressed by their moves and chanted “This is awesome!” Ortiz did a three amigos on Matt and then traded off with Santana for a standing vertical suplex. Santana took out Omega and Page with a senton on the outside.
No. 6—MJF, The Butcher and the Blade (last week: MJF ranked with singles)
Once he realized DDP was starting the match, MJF tagged in The Butcher and went into the crowd. Once DDP tagged QT in, MJF returned to tag himself back in. After delivering an eye poke to Marshall, he tagged in the Blade. While the ref wasn’t looking, MJF hit Dustin Rhodes with his diamond ring. WARDLOW and The Bunny also inserted themselves in the match. With DDP, Rhodes and Marshall all hitting their strides, MJF came out of nowhere for the rollup pin on Marshall.
No. 7—Dustin Rhodes, DDP, QT Marshall (last week: DDP ranked with singles)
After Rhodes hit The Butcher with an inverted atomic drop, he was hit with MJF’s diamond ring behind the ref’s back. All three members took turns attacking “The Natural”. Rhodes hit a power slam on The Blade. DDP followed with a Diamond Cutter on The Butcher. MJF was on the receiving end of a Dustin Destroyer and a Diamond Cutter. Marshall hit the QT Special on his opponents and DDP jumped off the top rope onto his opponents on the outside. They were blindsided when MJF held Marshall’s trunk for the pin.
No. 8—Dark Order (last week: 2)
Dark Order vignette aired with a recruiter speaking to someone off camera. The fans could hear a voice responding to him. The recruiter told the leader that they had been scouting Michael Nakazawa and could use him to get to Omega. They have also been scouting Cutler and Page.
What do you think of Dark potentially moving to TNT? What did you think of the shows this week? Would your rankings be different? Let us know in the comments.
