14. Derrick Rose — G, Detroit Pistons — Salary of $7,317,073

Derrick Rose is not what he once was, but he remains a valuable NBA contributor. Once an MVP, and then written off as a low-efficiency chucker, he has reinvented himself as a creator off the bench who can run the offense for stretches, create semi-efficient shots when the offense stalls out, and set the tables for his teammates. Those are valuable skills in today’s NBA. The Pistons are dramatically better offensively when Rose is on the floor.

Rose can still look like a star when he drives down the lane and makes a fancy layup. He’s strong and fast, and though his athleticism has waned from injury, it’s still top-notch.

Rose’s 3-point accuracy is down again this year after a blip of elite shooting last year. His mid-range shooting has never been a great weapon. But his finishing at the rim remains elite, and he has the handles to get there almost at will, particularly against opposing bench lineups. He’s a spark-plug offensively, and there’s plenty of teams who are missing a creator like that. He can create his own shot against set half-court defenses; that’s one of the most valuable playoff weapons in the NBA. A team like the Philadelphia 76ers would crave Rose.
