4. Bolster the middle of the defense

Kenny Clark is a keeper in the middle, but otherwise, the interior of Green Bay’s defensive line leaves something to be desired. Linebacker Blake Martinez is very productive (a team-leading 155 total tackles this year), but his athletic limits show in coverage and he’ll also be a free agent in March. B.J. Goodson will also hit free agency. Without Martinez and Goodson, Oren Burks and Ty Summers would become the Packers’ top two incumbent inside linebackers. That is obviously not ideal.

Interior defensive linemen and inside linebackers should be on Green Bay’s radar with early draft picks in April. Adding size up front, and adding back to front versatility to the linebacking corp, stand high on the list of specifics.

The 49ers’ gashing of the Packers’ run defense in the NFC title game, as Jimmy Garoppolo only had eight pass attempts (six completions), will stand as the lasting memory of the 2019-20 season and the clear indicator what needs to be fixed on that side of the ball for Green Bay. Stopping the run better will start in the middle, and failure to address that weakness will surely hold the Packers back again next season.
