A big key for the Bills to take the next step is to see continued growth out of third-year starting quarterback Josh Allen. Leading the Bills to their second playoff berth this century in only his second season out of the University of Wyoming was huge for him. So would be bringing back key pieces of the offensive line blocking in front of him. Of course, we’re talking about Quinton Spain.

Spain went undrafted out of West Virginia University in 2015. He played his first four NFL seasons as a member of the Tennessee Titans, earning a starting role at left guard in year two in the league. The Titans made the AFC playoffs in 2017, thanks in large part to their dominating offensive line. Though Spain was seen as the weak link of that unit, he’s not that for the Bills now.

Spain signed a one-year deal worth $2.0 million to play for the Bills. He will be entering his age-29 season with more than a few years of high-quality football left in the tank. With a chance to contend for a division title, why would Spain not want to play in Brian Daboll’s creative Buffalo offense for at least one more season? He’ll start again next year and will get paid in the process.

While re-signing an offensive guard isn’t the free-agency deal you’ll write home about, it’s the type of move that can give Allen the confidence he’ll need to progress entering year three. We know that Allen can run as well as any quarterback in football. The better continuity he has with his offensive line, the better he’ll perform in Daboll’s offense and for McDermott’s team.
