2020 NFL mock draft: Miami Dolphins trade up for Tua Tagovailoa
By Brad Weiss
The Detroit Lions move down to No. 5 overall with their trade with the Miami Dolphins, a trade that also nets them a late first round pick as well. That is a good thing for this organization, who lost nine straight games to close out the 2019 season, mostly due to the fact they were without franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford.
If Stafford is healthy, they are set at quarterback, which is why they have the flexibility to move down a couple of slots and address a real need. The defensive backfield was a problem for this Lions team all season long, and at No. 5 overall, they are able to bring in the best cornerback in this draft class in Jeffrey Okudah from Ohio State.
Okudah on this defense would be the CB1 right away, as he is one of the better cornerback prospects we have seen in recent drafts. He is a great cover guy, can come up and make the big hit, and has soft hands for a defensive back. The Lions have to rebuild their defense, and it starts here.
The New York Giants slide down to No. 6 after trading with the Los Angeles Chargers, something they did with this organization so many years ago with Eli Manning. Sure, the Chargers selected Manning at No. 1 overall, but he was quickly traded away to the Chargers, who would go on to bring in Philip Rivers that year.
In 2020, it is a new young quarterback that will take the helm once again, as Daniel Jones will be entering his second season as the team’s franchise guy. Jones played well after replacing Manning early in the 2019 campaign, showing he was well worth the No. 6 overall pick in 2019, and with No. 6 in 2020, they get him some protection.
There is a lot of talk as to who the best offensive tackle is in this draft class, but entering the Senior Bowl, I like Andrew Thomas from Georgia to be the first one off the board. Thomas is a guy who can come in and start on the left side right away at the NFL, and that move would enable the team to move Nate Solder to the right side, where he is likely better suited at this point in his career.
