Chicago Bears. Danny Trevathan. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. LB. 4. 57

The Bengals need some leadership on the defense side of the ball to help usher in a new era of Cincinnati football. One guy who has a proven track record of being a winner in this league who could be a difference-maker on this Cincinnati defense is Chicago Bears linebacker, Danny Trevathan.

Trevathan is an eight-year NFL veteran. He was a former sixth-round pick out of the University of Kentucky in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. Trevathan won a Super Bowl in his last season with the Broncos, cashing in by inking a four-year deal with the Bears in 2016. Although he’ll be 30 years old before this season, Trevathan should still have a bit left in the tank.

No, he’s not going to be the star on any defense he plays on, but what makes Trevathan a worthy free-agent pickup is that he does all the little things necessary from a complementary standpoint to make defenses great. The Bears were not a good football team when he arrived in 2016. He was instrumental in Chicago winning the division two years ago and being competitive in 2019.

The big question is if Cincinnati would be willing to overpay for a veteran on the back-nine of his NFL career. One thing that is an advantage in bringing Trevathan into the fold is that he played his college ball in Lexington, where he was a two-time All-SEC performer. He is also a native Ohioan, having grown up in Youngstown in the northern part of the state. He’d be a good culture fit here.
