College football 2020: Top 13 games we’ll hype up all offseason
7. Texas at LSU
Date: Saturday, Sept. 12 – Week 2
Remember when we were talking about the games of the year from the 2019 college football season? The early-year clash between the LSU Tigers and Texas Longhorns undoubtedly qualifies for one of those spots. While the end result for the two teams might have been drastically different with LSU hoisting the title and Texas fighting for national relevancy, the game itself was a wild shootout between Sam Ehlinger and Joe Burrow.
One piece of that equation will be back in the fold when these teams meet once again in 2020, this time in Baton Rouge. Ehlinger did not have the Heisman-caliber season in 2019 that many expected him to but there’s also no denying just how electrifying he can be when he finds a groove and puts the Longhorns on his back. And there’s a good chance he’ll have to do just that against LSU.
For the defending national champs though, this will be the first step for Ed Orgeron’s group proving that they were not a one-year wonder propelled by a historic season from Joe Burrow. Myles Brennan takes over at quarterback and, though many weapons on both sides of the ball are heading to the NFL from the 2019 roster, stars such as Ja’Marr Chase and Derek Stingley Jr. are back in the fold.
Fans may not get the same type of barn-burning shootout that we were treated to in the 2019 campaign but that’s okay. As Texas looks to take one last try at being all the way “back” with Ehlinger and Tom Herman and as LSU aims to acquit themselves well in defense of their title, this should be a high-stakes affair with high tension from kickoff to triple-zeroes.
