5. Darren Fells, TE

David Njoku isn’t going anywhere. He has shown flashes of what he can become in his first three years in the NFL.

In the same reality, Njoku has frequently been banged up. Last season, he played only four games due to injury.

Ricky Seals-Jones got a lot of play in Njoku’s absence. Seals-Jones will be a restricted free agent this offseason and bringing back Darren Fells would be a wise idea for new head coach Kevin Stefanski.

Fells spent the 2018 season with the Browns. He saw limited action in 16 games, but he did have three receiving touchdowns backing up Njoku. Now, after a solid year, Fells and Njoku could be a dominant two tight-end system.

The team’s offense doesn’t need to add too much at the skill positions. Regardless, Fells should be on the team’s radar. When you draft a quarterback number-one overall, you need to give him as much as possible. Two large tight ends — Njoku standing 6-foot-4 and Fells 6-foot-7 — would give Mayfield a lot of space and options to make plays.

Playcalling was an obvious issue last season, which is a large reason why the team was 20th in the NFL in third-down conversion percentage (36.2%) and 13th in red zone scoring percentage (58.0%). With better in-game scheming, and more options like Fells, the Browns can be far better in these scenarios in 2020.

In 2019 with the Houston Texans, Fells had 34 receptions for 341 yards and seven scores.
