Cleveland Browns free agency 2020: Top 5 targets
2. Jason Peters, LT
Dorsey blew the top off of the 2019 offseason when he completed a trade to acquire Beckham Jr. from the New York Giants. Most people had their minds locked in on visions of Mayfield throwing 40+ touchdowns with the likes of Beckham and Jarvis Landry at his disposal in 2019.
The part of that trade that went unnoticed was that Kevin Zeitler was sent to the New York Giants in the package for Beckham and Vernon. Compromising offensive line talent is never a good idea, and Dorsey had to have learned this after the team had pass protection issues in 2019.
Cleveland is still built to compete now. So, Jason Peters should be one of their top free agent targets. No, Peters isn’t a Zeitler replacement, as both play different positions.
But letting Greg Robinson walk and giving Peters a short-term deal would be lighter on the team’s pockets for the long term and they’d get a great upgrade at left tackle.
Peters does come with some injury concern. He missed three games this past season and he is 38-years old. Although, he still plays to a high level at one of the most crucial positions in football.
Pro Football Focus gave him an 81.8 overall player grade in 2019.
The Browns run blocking wasn’t bad, but they struggled to help Mayfield last season. Peters would make both the Beckham trade and Mayfield draft investment look a lot better if he is playing left tackle for the Browns in 2020.
