Indiana Pacers

Sending out: Myles Turner (ATL)

Bringing in: Dewayne Dedmon (SAC), Dragan Bender (MIL), Jarred Vanderbilt (DEN), 2020 first-round pick (CHA)

The Indiana Pacers have had a surprisingly strong season, considering Victor Oladipo has yet to make his debut. While they are a lock to make the playoffs, the chances of them breaking through in the Eastern Conference seems fairly remote. 538’s model projects them to finish with the sixth-best record in the East and gives them a less than one percent chance of making the Finals. In the case, it might be worth rolling things over for a year and hoping for a better situation next season.

Dedmon is nowhere near the caliber of Turner but he does similar things at a respectable level — protecting the rim and spacing the floor. Bender’s season has been disrupted by injury but in his seven NBA games not playing for the cancerous Phoenix Suns, he averaged 10.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.0 blocks per 36 minutes, shooting 44.4 percent on 3-pointers. Since recovering from that injury he’s averaged 21.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 blocks per game, shooting 42.6 percent on 3s, for the Bucks’ G League affiliate. He’s a piece worth experimenting with. Vanderbilt has been similarly dominant in his G League minutes this season — 14.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.4 steals, 0.9 blocks per game.

This trade almost certainly makes the Pacers worse this season. But it gives them a reasonable facsimile for Turner for next year when Oladipo has had time to fully reintegrate and get his legs back, along with two promising young players and a first-round pick that has a roughly 40 percent chance of landing in the top four.
