Boston Celtics

Sending out: Romeo Langford (CHA)

Bringing in: Georges Niang (UTA)

What do you get for an Eastern Conference contender that already has talent and depth? More depth! At first glance, the Celtics roster could probably use another big, defensive body to wrestle with Marc Gasol, Joel Embiid, Domantas Sabonis and Robin Lopez in the playoffs. But there aren’t any obvious answers on the trade market that don’t have the Celtics giving up another useful piece — big man depth might need to be addressed on the buyout market.

However, this deal lets them build on strength. Langford has had a few moments and he’s fun to fantasize about but there’s almost no way he’s going to factor into a playoff run this year or next. He needs developmental opportunities that are going to be in short supply playing behind Marcus Smart, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Gordon Hayward. Niang’s ceiling might be fairly low but he has the size to wrestle with 4s and he’s made 43.0 percent of his 221 3-point attempts with the Jazz over the last two seasons.

Depending on who the Celtics match up with in the playoffs, his shooting might be preferable as an option in the limited minutes that might otherwise go to Semi Ojeleye or Grant Williams.
