2. D Alec Martinez

In mid-January Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported the Kings are willing to move Martinez. He is under contract through the 2020-21 season, with a $4 million cap hit, so while it’s a moveable contract in a broad sense, some contending teams may have a hard time absorbing it without sending the Kings similar or more money back.

Martinez is another long-time member of the Kings, making his debut in 2009 for the only team he’s ever played for. His shining moment came in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, when clinched the Cup with a game-winning goal to beat the New York Rangers.

Martinez is a left-handed shot, but he has played the right side a lot with the Kings and can play both spots. The last couple seasons haven’t been as good (eight points in 35 games this year), but he had more than 20 points in five straight seasons from 2013-14 to 2017-18 with at least nine goals in four of those campaigns.

The Kings only have three defenseman currently under contract for next year, counting Martinez. But moves to get younger, or pave the way for younger guys, have to be on the table and contenders seeking help on the blue line should be calling Blake about Martinez.
