Buffalo Bills: 5 offseason needs in 2020
By Jordan Foote
1. No. 1 receiver
While the Buffalo Bills’ receiving corps certainly isn’t horrible, it could use some work. From top to bottom, adding at least one or two depth pieces via the draft and free agency is a must. On top of that, there doesn’t seem to be a true No. 1 receiver on the team.
29-year-old John Brown is the best receiver currently on the roster. He’s coming off his best season in years after somewhat resurrecting his image with the Baltimore Ravens. In year one of his three-year, $27M contract with Buffalo, Brown had 72 receptions for 1,060 yards and six touchdowns. That’s solid but if that caliber of player is your best receiver, your offense has a ceiling.
Behind Brown, veteran Cole Beasley turned in one of his best campaigns as well. In 2019, the former Dallas Cowboy caught 67 passes for 778 yards and added six touchdowns of his own to the team’s total. Beasley signed a four-year, $29M contract with the Bills that he’s entering just year two of, so he’s slated to play a major role again in 2020.
What the Buffalo Bills need in order to take their game (and really, Josh Allen’s game) to the next level is a bona fide top receiver. Luckily for them, this year’s receiver class is one of the deepest we’ve seen in quite some time. When Buffalo picks at No. 22, there should still be a good wideout available. Surrounding Allen with top-flight talent should be an emphasis this offseason, and satisfying that need via the draft is a more than suitable solution for all parties involved.
