4. Cornerback Byron Jones

The secondary is a big concern for the Giants, and it has taken a lot of hits over the years. The most recent came with the departure of cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who was cut late in the season after he used a slur in an online exchange with a fan on Twitter.

Even before getting cut, Jenkins was causing issues for the Giants due to his apparent lack of motivation to play on a losing team. The loss of Jenkins was probably good for the locker room, but it also took away the Giants’ most talented cornerback.

The Giants have been remaking the position for the past several years, drafting DeAndre Baker and Corey Ballentine in 2019 as well as Sam Beal in the 2018 supplemental draft, but this unit is in desperate need of a top corner to anchor the group. Fortunately for New York, one should hit the market in former Cowboys’ corner Byron Jones.

Jones is one of the Cowboys’ top free agents and they would love to retain him, but their inability to sign Dak Prescott long term should leave Jones a true free agent once the offseason begins. That should open up the bidding for everyone, and few teams can afford a true splurge at corner like the Giants can.

Signing Jones would immensely strengthen the Giants’ secondary, putting less pressure on the youngsters to lock down with the opposing team’s top receivers. The Giants’ defense needs a lot of work, but adding Jones could turn the secondary from a weakness into a strength.
