If you can, draft one of these three first basemen. They can give you power and contact, and the latter is something that’s becoming harder to find. They will all be gone before the third round.

Pete Alonso, NYM

What can I say that we don’t already know? Alonso should have been on the Mets roster in 2018 and he showed why last season. He broke the rookie home run record with 53 along with 120 RBIs and a .260 average.

His projections can go two ways. Alonso can hit 60 home runs and dominate the NL East. Or, he could regress to 35 home runs with a .238 average. This uncertainty about his production could see him fall in drafts.

Freddie Freeman, ATL

You aren’t jumping out of your chair when you draft Freeman. He does everything well and there aren’t many holes in his game. Over the last four seasons, Freeman averaged 31 home runs, 95 RBIs and a .303 average.

He hit a career-high 38 homers and 121 RBIs. The Braves are a team on the rise and added Marcell Ozuna to the middle of the lineup to help Freeman and others.

Cody Bellinger, LAD

Since coming up to the big leagues, Bellinger has been one of the top-five hitters in the leagues. He finished with 47 home runs, 115 RBIs and a .305 average in his MVP season. Those numbers could look even better this season with the addition of Mookie Betts.

While many will draft Bellinger as an outfielder, looking at the lack of depth at first base, why not draft him there? There are plenty of outfielders to fill out your roster. If you have the No. 4 pick, you could have Bellinger at first base and Aaron Judge in the outfield and still have the flexibility to move them around.

The first base pool became a bit more shallow this season compared to year’s past. You can still find value late in the draft but I’d want to lock up this position earlier than others.
