3. Doug Weight

Weight has been out of coaching since being fired by the New York Islanders after the 2017-18 season, his only full season in the job. Prior to that. after a 19-year playing career, he was an assistant coach with the Islanders for several seasons.

Guerin and Weight played together with the Edmonton Oilers for four seasons from 1997-2001, and then with the Islanders during one season toward the end of their respective playing careers in 2008-09. And they are apparently friends.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet instantly pointed to Weight, with an inherent presumption he wants to get back into coaching after taking time to watch his son play, as a name to watch for the head coaching vacancy in Minnesota.

Weight could easily land as an assistant coach somewhere next season, and the Wild are definitely a possibility there with the assumption of a cleaning out of the coaching staff. But Guerin may skip that smaller step, and if Weight is the new man behind the bench in Minnesota next season it won’t be surprising.
