4. Edge rusher

Truth be told, there aren’t any teams in the NFL that shouldn’t be looking to add edge rushing talent on an annual basis. The Chiefs have a slightly greater need than most teams though. Their high-flying offense forces most teams to pass the ball to keep up with their offensive output. That gives the Kansas City defense a ton of opportunities to rush the pocket on obvious passing downs.

Last year’s acquisition of Frank Clark was supposed to give the Chiefs a big boost on the edge. In some ways, the move worked out really well for Kansas City. Clark only managed to notch eight sacks in 14 regular season games while fighting through injuries, but he was dominant during the playoffs.

On the flip side, Clark is only one guy. The rest of the group of outside rushers for the Chiefs is decidedly ordinary. Emmanuel Ogbah led the group with 5.5 sacks of his own. Adding another pass-rusher to rotate with Alex Okafor opposite Clark could upgrade this defense from good to great.

The Chiefs aren’t going to go crazy and throw a ton of money at a big-name edge rusher in free agency. That means they’re likely to target a young player in the draft they believe can develop into that kind of guy. Adding one more promising edge rusher should be a priority for the Chiefs this offseason.
