And here’s some more potential help when it comes to stopping the run. Last offseason, Gutekunst addressed the team’s linebacking corps in the form of veteran free agents Preston Smith (Redskins) and Za’Darius Smith (Ravens). The duo proved to be major assets when it came to chasing down opposing signal-callers.

All told, the latter led LaFleur’s finished sixth in the league with 13.5 sacks and Preston Smith was eighth in the NFL with a dozen quarterback traps.

Then again, there’s not much use to tackling the quarterback when the running back has the football. As previously mentioned, Green Bay’s biggest weakness was its inability to stop opponents consistently on the ground.

Five-year pro David Mayo is not the most glamorous of names. As a member of the Carolina Panthers, he did a solid job filling the bill when perennial Pro Bowler Luck Kuechly was unavailable. He spent 2019 with the Giants and via PFF, only three linebackers graded out higher when it came to shutting down the run.
