4. Find a reliable placekicker

It wasn’t really all that long ago that Cowboys’ specialist Dan Bailey was the most accurate kicker in NFL history. Of course, that seems to be a statistic that changes from year to year. But give the man his due. In his first six years with Jason Garrett’s team, he owned an impressive 89.5 field goal percentage (171-of-191) and connected on all 250 PAT tries.

However, he suffered a groin injury in 2017 that caused him to miss four games. The following summer, he was released by the team in favor of Brett Maher. These days, he’s handling the kicking duties for the Minnesota Vikings (although he can become an unrestricted free agent next month) and enjoyed a bounce-back year in 2019.

But Maher’s tenure with the franchise lasted a total of 29 regular-season contests. This past year, he was automatic on PATs but missed 10 field goals in the team’s first 13 games before being released by the organization. Kai Forbath finished out the year but is slated for free agency. It will be interesting to see if he is re-signed after not missing a field goal (10) or PAT (10) in his brief stint.

Of course, McCarthy had a pretty consistent kicker in Mason Crosby. And it’s worth noting that the veteran performer can become a free agent in mid-March.
