1. Minnesota Vikings

Obvious, but true. If Griffen wants to come back to the Vikings above all else, that option should be available to him. Will Mike Zimmer want to rely on Stephen Weatherly and Ifeadi Odenigbo in a rotation opposite Danielle Hunter?

Also obvious is the finances attached to bringing Griffen back. The Vikings can clear more cap space by cutting cornerback Xavier Rhodes, cutting or restructuring defensive tackle Linval Joseph or even extending quarterback Kirk Cousins. They also have a decision to make on safety Anthony Harris, who is a free agent and is coming off a breakout campaign in 2019.

The Vikings are still in win-now mode for 2020, barring a surprising shift and some big moves to move things in the opposite direction. If Griffen is willing to take a discount to come back, surely well below (let’s say half) of what he was going to make this year under his previous deal, bringing him back seems to be a virtual no-brainer with little ability to otherwise replace him externally.

If another team or two is willing to push the Vikings out of the picture with an offer they can’t get to and Griffen can’t (and shouldn’t) refuse, then the dynamic changes. But right now, the easy assumption is Griffen will be back in Minnesota for at least one more year.
