Minnesota Vikings free agency 2020: Top 5 targets
1. Byron Jones
As we mentioned earlier, the secondary is a major concern for the Vikings this offseason. Xavier Rhodes is the Vikings’ clear top option at corner, but the next two men up on the depth chart are free agents.
Both Trae Waynes and Mackensie Alexander are slated to hit the market, leaving the Vikings in need of at least one new corner. Re-signing either player remains a possibility, but Minnesota can also pursue an upgrade at the position.
The best option in the free-agent pool is former Cowboy Byron Jones, who is expected to avoid any tags in Dallas. Jones is entering his prime and did well as the Cowboys’ top corner, a role he wouldn’t have to play with Rhodes in the fold in Minnesota.
Pairing Rhodes and Jones would give the Vikings the top cornerback tandem in their division, making it much harder for opponents to throw on them. The NFC is also top-heavy with proven passers, so having an elite secondary makes all the difference here.
It won’t be cheap to sign Jones, but the Vikings have always been able to find a way to create the cap room for players they really want. Jones should be right at the top of the Vikings’ wish list, and signing him would be the start of a tremendous offseason in Minnesota.
