5 biggest losers from the 2020 MLB offseason
Colorado Rockies
Five-time All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado is in camp with the Colorado Rockies, but that wasn’t always a certainty this offseason.
What a difference a year can make. At this point in 2019, Arenado was signing an eight-year, $260 million contract extension with the Rockies that looked like it would keep him in Colorado for the bulk of his career. But when the club fell back to 71 wins last season after two consecutive playoff appearances, Arenado started looking for his way out instead of enduring a rebuild.
The Rockies listened to offers throughout the offseason but nothing came of it. Instead, Arenado remains with the club as a disgruntled superstar who feels scorned by his own team. After General Manager Jeff Bridich told the Denver Post that they planned to keep Arenado going forward, Arenado didn’t take kindly to his comments.
“There’s a lot of disrespect from people there that I don’t want to be a part of. You can quote that,” he said in a text message to MLB.com’s Thomas Harding.
“You ask what I thought of Jeff’s quotes and I say I don’t care what people say around there. There is a lot of disrespect.”
The Rockies did little to placate their superstar this offseason. Instead, a club that two seasons ago looked like a team on the rise heads into 2020 with plenty of question marks and a star player frustrated with the direction of the team and who doesn’t want to be there.
