If you’re looking for a starting shortstop in this tier, you already lost. These are the backups in mixed leagues.

Carter Kieboom, WSH

Kieboom played in just 11 games last year with the Nationals. He hit .128 with two home runs and two RBIs. But, in 109 Triple-A games, he hit 16 home runs, 79 RBIs and .303. With a full season of playing time coming up, it could get better.

With Trea Turner as the shortstop and Anthony Rendon playing in Los Angeles, Kieboom will take over third base and will earn eligibility after 10 games. He won’t do anything great, but will be a great bench bat in Roto leagues.

Jon Berti, MIA

Outside of the experts, not many people may have known about Berti. In 73 games, he hit six home runs, 24 RBIs and .273. He bounced around the field as well and is eligible at third base, shortstop and outfield.

According to Roster Resource, Berti is listed on the bench. The Marlins have Brian Anderson at third, Miguel Rojas at shortstop and Jonathan Villar, Garrett Cooper and Corey Dickerson in the outfield.

Berti will get some playing time but unless someone gets hurt, it’ll be inconsistent.

Nick Ahmed, ARI

Ahmed continues to get better at the plate. His 2019 season was his best to date. In 158 games, he hit 19 home runs, 82 RBIs and .254, all career highs. Ahmed also stole eight bases. The Diamondbacks rewarded him with a nice extension.

The Arizona front office also improved the offense by trading for Starling Marte. Ahmed will hit towards the bottom of the lineup but he can build off his 2019 season, he’ll be a valuable late-draft pick.

Luis Urias, MIL

Urias hit just .223 with four home runs and 24 RBIs in 71 games with the Padres. He was then traded to the Brewers. As of this writing, he will start the season either on the IL (fractured hamate bone) or in Triple-A. Milwaukee’s infield is a bit crowded.

Urias shouldn’t be drafted in most leagues. However, should the breakout season come, he will be one of the first players added off the waiver wire. Keep tabs on him in the first month.

Andrelton Simmons, LAA

Simmons was just a glove in Atlanta with just one season of over 10 home runs. Since joining the Angels, he has a .280 average with 36 total home runs and 228 RBIs. He doesn’t do one thing great but is good in all five categories.

Hitting eighth in the improved Angels lineup may not result in a lot of at-bats. But, he can hit 12 home runs, steal double-digit bases and finish with a .274 average, worthy of a dart throw pick.

Willy Adames, TB

Adames’ final season numbers don’t look that great, but if you break it down by half, there’s something to look forward to. He hit .237/10 HR/26 RBI in the first half and .278/10 HR/26 RBI in the second half.

Interesting that the counting stats were the same but he was seeing the ball better after the break. Adames struck out just 60 times in the second half compared to 93 times in the early half. If you are looking for a breakout player late in the draft, I like Adames a lot.
