Fantasy baseball 2020 tiered shortstop rankings
By Bill Pivetz
Of all the infield positions, shortstop has the biggest top tier. You can’t go wrong drafting any shortstop from this tier.
Xander Bogaerts, BOS
Bogaerts has played in six full seasons already but has not even entered the prime of his career. He hit .309 with 33 home runs, 117 RBIs and 110 runs last season. At the end of the season, he outperformed some of the players ranked ahead of him this season.
Bogaerts hits the ball well, accumulating counting stats as well as a good average. The loss of Mookie Betts is going to hurt. Plus, Bogaerts doesn’t contribute to steals like some other players do in this tier.
Alex Bregman, HOU
I talked about Bregman on my third base rankings post. He has power, contact and speed, a true fantasy baseball asset.
Trea Turner, WSH
After coming off a great 2018 season, fantasy baseball owners were burned by Turner. He missed 40 games but when he did play, he was still great. In 122 games, Turner hit .298 with 19 home runs, 57 RBIs and 35 steals.
Turner is close to being a first-round pick. The low RBI total is his only downfall. He’ll steal a minimum of 40 bases and could reach 60. He has pop in his bat and will hit close to .300 in the process.
Trevor Story, COL
Hitting in Colorado tends to help good hitters become great. He has back-to-back 35-plus home run seasons. His RBI total dropped from 108 in 2018 to 85 last season. But, Story was still providing owners with steals, 27 and 25 in the last two years.
As long as Arenado is still on the team, Story and the rest of the Rockies offense will score some runs. With the power, contact and speed combination, Story is a first-round pick in all league formats.
Francisco Lindor, CLE
The Lindor trade rumors are still circling but nothing of note has come to light. So, his fantasy value is based on him staying with the Indians this season. He had a down year in his counting stats but the batting average was still great. Lindor finished with 32 home runs, 74 RBIs, 101 runs, 22 steals and a .284 average.
The Indians still have the main pieces of the offense while bringing in Cesar Hernandez and Domingo Santana. Lindor will hit leadoff again, giving him plenty of chances to get on base and score runs. As long as he enters the season healthy, he’s a top-seven pick and can help in all five categories.
The infield is done. The shortstop depth has gotten better over the last couple of seasons. It does help that some players are eligible at multiple positions. I’d still wait on drafting one but the ones left aren’t going to hurt you. The next position is going to be outfield, featuring 70 players.
