5 teams that should take a chance on Jameis Winston
2. Indianapolis Colts
As soon as general manager Chris Ballard said the jury was still out on Jacoby Brissett at the end of last season, with no commitment to him beyond 2020, the Colts have automatically been put in the market for a quarterback this offseason. Philip Rivers, Tom Brady and Derek Carr are out there, perhaps in concert with drafting someone if they decide to completely move on from Brissett.
On their list of potential landing spots for Winston, CBS Sports placed the Colts at No. 3. With ample cap space once again this offseason ($86.16 million, second-most in the league via Over The Cap), Indianapolis can win any bidding war for any player they want to.
Brissett’s drop-off last year was rooted in missing only one game with a torn MCL (and playing through it from there), as well as other injuries that hampered the Colts. So he probably deserves a shot to prove himself when fully healthy over a larger sample, with better and healthier pieces around him.
But the argument Brissett is simply a backup-caliber quarterback is there until further notice, and the Colts are at least reported to be looking hard at Rivers. But Winston is far younger than the former Charger, at 26 years old, and Colts’ head coach Frank Reich might see moldable upside that some other available options just don’t have.
