There have been better years for the Mountain West, but the 2020 conference tournament is poised to be a lot of fun. The Mountain West Tournament features some serious intrigue as San Diego State enters it with a chance to finish off a one-loss campaign.

The Aztecs, who only lost to UNLV during the regular season, are a deep team that has a star in Malachi Flynn and the nation’s third-best defense. Flynn, who poured in 36 points in the Aztecs’ regular-season finale against Nevada, has scored more than 20 points nine times this year, including three of his past four games.

That 28-1 record earned the Aztecs the top seed in the Mountain West tournament, where they will await the winner of the 8-9 matchup between Fresno State and Air Force. UNLV does lie in wait for a potential semifinal showdown if they can knock off Boise State, and the Runnin’ Rebels have given San Diego State the most trouble this season.

The Aztecs only beat UNLV by four on the road before losing by three at home, so a third meeting may not be ideal for their hopes of winning the tournament. The other half of the draw is headlined by Utah State, the Mountain West’s best hope for an at-large bid.

The Aggies were the more highly touted team entering the season, but an injury to Neemias Queta disrupted their chemistry in the early going. Queta has rounded into form down the stretch, racking up three double-doubles in his past seven games, helping Utah State go 9-2 since Jan. 18.

Utah State will await the winner of the 7-10 matchup between New Mexico and San Jose State in the quarterfinals. The 3 seed in the Mountain West is Nevada, which went 12-6 in conference play, and they draw the winner of the 6-11 game featuring Colorado State and Wyoming.

The Aztecs are going dancing regardless, but they probably have to win the conference tournament to secure a spot on the top line on Selection Sunday. Utah State is on the bubble and can probably get an at-large with the committee weighing their performance without Queta, but it can ill afford a loss to anyone not named San Diego State.
