The Los Angeles Chargers want Tom Brady? They should work a deal with Trent Williams’ representation and send a draft pick to the Washington Redskins.

This couldn’t have worked out better for Tom Telesco.

The Los Angeles Chargers general manager swung a trade on Wednesday, landing five-time Pro Bowl guard Trai Turner from the Carolina Panthers, in exchange for the oft-injured left tackle, Russell Okung. While strengthening the line’s interior, Telesco created a gaping hole on the edge.

Now, incredibly, one of the best left tackles in football is available.

Dianna Russini of ESPN reports the Redskins have granted Trent Williams the ability to seek a trade. This after Williams sat out all of 2019 in a dispute with the medical staff.

The Chargers, who are one of the candidates to land quarterback Tom Brady in free agency, should make Williams playing in powder blue a reality.

Los Angeles would be wise to start by offering its second-round pick in April’s draft to Washington. Williams turns 32 years old before the new season, but remains one of the top players in football. His contract has one year and $14.5 million remaining on it.

For Washington, it makes sense to wait until all offers have presented themselves. If the price becomes a first-round pick for the Chargers, it’s too risky. Los Angeles can’t move the sixth-overall pick in a deal for Williams. At that point, draft Andrew Thomas or Mekhi Becton for the left side.

However, if nobody is willing to give a high first-rounder, the Chargers can offer No. 37 overall (and a late-round sweetener if need-be). Washington, which doesn’t have a second-round pick after dealing it to the Indianapolis Colts last year when moving up for edge rusher Montez Sweat in 2019, should see the pick as a boon to its rebuilding effort.

By landing Williams and Turner, the Chargers could show Brady and his camp the value in signing with Los Angeles. Telesco could present a high-quality offensive line along with Austin Ekeler, Hunter Henry, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams as weapons.

The Chargers could then use their first-round choice on another tackle for the right side, or beef up the defense should a player like Ohio State cornerback Jeffrey Okudah or Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons falls.

If Telesco can bring Williams in, landing Brady becomes much more realistic.
