The 2020 NFL Draft class is deep with talent at wide receiver, but Colorado’s Laviska Shenault Jr. entered the NFL combine as one of this year’s top wideout prospects. Unfortunately, the physical receiver’s biggest question mark — his well-documented injury history — reared its ugly head again last week in Indianapolis.

Shenault began the week by weighing in at a beefy 227 pounds, but the remainder of his physical measurements were less than optimal. The oft-injured Colorado receiver and part-time runner barely failed to meet the 6-foot-1 threshold, and logged a hand size of just nine inches.

But most problematic for the prospect was his 4.58-second time in the 40-yard dash, which was complicated by a core muscle injury he played through during his junior college season. As noted by FanSided’s Sayre Bedinger, the multi-faceted Shenault is a burner, as evidenced by this 49-yard touchdown run:

Shenault was unable to run the 40-yard dash a second time, or participate in any further activities at the NFL combine. ESPN’s Adam Schefter soon reported Shenault will undergo surgery to repair his injury, and will be sidelined for at least four-to-six weeks.

Shenault’s third surgery in as many years will likely force him out of the first tier of receiver prospects. It remains to be seen if an NFL team is willing to risk a first-round selection on Shenault given his ongoing injury concerns, or if the wideout, who recorded a 1,011-yard, nine-touchdown sophomore season, ends up becoming a second-round steal in the 2020 NFL Draft.
