Despite entering a draft which lacks high-end talent at tight end, Vanderbilt’s Jared Pinkney continued his year-long trend of doing everything wrong, as he continued to drop further down draft boards thanks to a horrible week at last week’s NFL combine.

Pinkney was projected as a potential 2020 first-round selection after electing to return to Vanderbilt to finish his senior year. Only 233 receiving yards and two touchdowns later, Pinkney left college, as well as the first-round conversation.

The 6-foot-4 tight end didn’t help himself during Senior Bowl week, where scouts could no longer blame his lack of productivity on his dysfunctional college offense, and his draft stock fell even further. Since he continued to demonstrate difficulties in separating from defenders in the passing game, Pinkney needed to show off his speed during combine drills.

Pinkney demonstrated excellent speed — for an offensive lineman:

Pinkney barely broke through the five-second barrier on his second attempt, but his slow time still ranked last among all tight ends. The Vanderbilt product continued his nose dive by failing to impress during his position-specific drills.

The cherry on top of Pinkney’s trip to Indianapolis was his combine interview with the New England Patriots, where he was told he has a “loser’s mentality.”
