One perfect 2020 NFL free agency signing for each team
Los Angeles Chargers: T Anthony Castonzo (Indianapolis Colts)
Things were looking up for the Los Angeles Chargers. Anthony Lynn’s club was tied for the best record in the AFC in 2018 at 12-4. The wild card Bolts traveled to Baltimore and knocked off the Ravens in the first round of the playoffs before succumbing to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in the divisional round.
But 2019 wound up having a very different feel to it. Talented and young safety Derwin James and running back Melvin Gordon missed the beginning of the season for far different reasons. The latter eventually ended a holdout and returned to play in the final 12 games. James came back for the final five weeks after recovering from a foot injury.
It all ended in a dismal 5-11 showing, including a 0-6 mark within the division, and a last place finish in the AFC West. The franchise is moving on from quarterback Philip Rivers, Gordon and tight end Hunter Henry figure to test free agency and left tackle Russell Okung – off an injury-shortened year – is being dealt to Carolina for guard Trai Turner.
So if available, the Chargers could fill a need by adding tackle Anthony Castonzo. He’s played and started in 132 regular-season games since the Colts made him the 22nd overall pick back in 2011.
