3. Dolphins overpay Ereck Flowers

Flowers deserves a ton of credit for resurrecting his career with the Redskins. The 25-year-old guard was dangerously close to playing himself out of the NFL after his disastrous stint with the Giants.

That doesn’t mean he played well enough to command a reported three-year, $30 million deal from the Dolphins. There aren’t many quality guards available via free agency at the moment, but there’s no reason for Miami to pay Flowers like a borderline Pro Bowler.

Even if the Dolphins get that level of production from Flowers it’s not as if he’s going to be the player who pushes them into the playoffs. He’s the wrong player to overpay for a team that’s still struggling to climb their way into the playoff race.

The only saving grace is that the Dolphins still have plenty of money to spend in free agency. They simply should have overpaid someone with more upside than Flowers. He’s still a young player, but he’s played enough NFL snaps to be near the top of his professional learning curve.

The Dolphins should have done better with this amount of money.
