1. Derrick Brown

Brown is still holding on to the honor of being the consensus number one defensive tackle in his draft class at the moment. His college tape at Auburn certainly backs that up. He was a one man wrecking crew at times for the Tigers.

On the other hand, his NFL Combine performance put some serious questions in the minds of quite a few front offices. In particular, his 8.22 time in the three-cone drill was horrific for a player who is supposed to go in the top 10. Look for him to try to silence concerns about that drill during his Pro Day if he’s able to hold one.

Expect the Panthers and other teams interested in spending a first rounder on Brown to focus more on his SEC film. He’s a big bodied defensive tackle who has the explosion to make plays up the field. There may be valid concerns about his ability to move laterally, but he can knife into the backfield to trouble opposing quarterbacks.

At the moment, Brown represents the most likely outcome for Carolina at No. 7. The Panthers still have a lot of scouting work to do though. Don’t be surprised to see the Panthers connected with a lot of other prospects before draft night arrives. Brown may seem like a lock now, but there’s a lot of time left in the team’s scouting process.
