NFL free agency instant grades: How did your team do?
NFC North
Chicago Bears: D
The Bears are right to give up on Mitchell Trubisky at quarterback. That doesn’t make trading for Nick Foles the right solution to the team’s issues under center. Any number of choices would have been better than betting on the former Eagles star.
Giving Jimmy Graham two years and $16 million is indefensible. He looks completely cooked when he manages to stay on the field. The big deal for Robert Quinn isn’t much better. He’ll be fine next year, but the deal is going to look ugly after that.
Detroit Lions: D
Trading Slay makes it clear that the Lions are pressing a hard reset button. They would have been better served to sit out free agency as a result of that philosophical choice.
Instead, they gave really ordinary guys like Jamie Collins and Danny Shelton above-market deals. They may be familiar with Matt Patricia, but that probably won’t matter after next season. There’s not much to like here for Lions fans.
Green Bay Packers: B
The Packers didn’t have a ton of work to do this week, but adding an athletic linebacker like Christian Kirksey should really help them next year.
Other than that, there really isn’t much to evaluate. Re-signing Mercedes Lewis is fine, but doesn’t do anything close to move the needle. The same goes for inking Rick Wager. Green Bay fans haven’t had much to read about, but their front office continues to move the roster in a positive direction.
Minnesota Vikings: C+
The Diggs trade isn’t great value for the Vikings, but the rest of their free agency business has been above-average. That’s why Minnesota’s grade ends up as a C+.
Signing Kirk Cousins to a more team-friendly deal is a step forward for the offense. Franchising Anthony Harris and signing Michael Pierce to a good value deal also helps bump the organization’s mark up. The offense has likely taken a step back, but the defense could be even more frightening in 2020.
