3. Grant Delpit, LSU safety

Delpit entered the season as a consensus top 10 pick. Then he put in a nondescript final season at LSU. As such, his draft stock is slipping towards the back end of Round 1.

That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be a real consideration for the Cowboys at No. 16. He’s a clear upgrade over what they can expect to get out of Clinton-Dix at safety. The two players are very different, but Delpit is the superior defensive back.

His ability to prowl the final third of the field and prevent deep plays should be his strength at the next level. He’s not a Ronnie Lott-level hitter in the middle of the field, but he’s got terrific range when the ball is in the air. That makes him an excellent schematic fit for how the Cowboys like to deploy their two safeties.

Drafting Delpit might also allow the Cowboys to deploy Clinton-Dix closer to the line of scrimmage on select downs. That’s the best way to get value out of the former Packers defender. Delpit isn’t going to be an immediate star but he can help the defense right away in Big D.
