3. Settle the quarterback situation

Led by veteran quarterback Alex Smith, the 2018 Washington Redskins got off to a 6-3 start. That third setback of the season came at home against the Houston Texans. In that game, Smith suffered a horrific leg injury and hasn’t seen the playing field since.

Over their last 23 games, the ‘Skins have used a total of five starting quarterbacks and the club owns a dismal 4-19 mark in those contests. The list includes Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez, Josh Johnson, Case Keenum and 2019 first-round draft choice.

Sanchez and Johnson are long gone while McCoy and Keenum both had their starting opportunities this past year. But the former remains within the NFC East but now as a member of the New York Giants. Meanwhile, Keenum’s newest employer is the Cleveland Browns.

Earlier this week, the team traded for a former Carolina Panthers’ quarterback. But Ron Rivera is bringing Kyle Allen to Landover and not Cam Newton. ESPN’s John Keim reports that the ‘Skins are giving up a fifth-round pick for the young signal-caller.

Dwayne Haskins was the 15th-overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft. He saw action in only two of the club’s first nine games but was in the opening lineup in Week 9 against the Bills at Buffalo.

It was the first of seven straight starts for the former Ohio State Buckeye, who threw for seven scores and only four interceptions over that stretch. An ankle injury sidelined him for the season finale but he’s obviously in the picture. Meanwhile, will Alex Smith take the field in 2020?
