Washington Redskins: 5 offseason needs in 2020
2. Resolve the Trent Williams situation
He was the fourth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and named to seven Pro Bowls in his nine seasons on the field. But left tackle Trent Williams did not play football in 2019 due to a holdout. And after he opted to report to the team, he apparently failed his physical and his season was truly over.
This offseason, he and new head coach Ron Rivera spoke and apparently when it was all said and done, the team has given the 31-year-old pro permission to gauge his trade value (courtesy of Les Carpenter of the Washington Post).
Any number of teams have interest in the former University of Oklahoma standout. The Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins each allowed an NFL-high 58 sacks this past season. It’s worth noting that Brian Flores’ team does have three first-round draft choices and a total of 14 picks in the 2020 draft.
The New York Jets have focused on upgrading their offensive line this offseason and have already signed four free-agent blockers. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers surrendered 47 quarterback traps this past season and will now have a 43-year-old quarterback to protect by the time 2020 begins.
Of course, Williams is also reportedly looking for a big pay day and that could make moving him a bit trickier. But the Redskins – who added tackle Cornelius need to bring closure to this issue as quickly as possible.
