2020 NFL Draft: 5 overrated prospects that will go in Round 1
1. Justin Herbert
Herbert is the winner of this year’s award for player most likely to get his general manager fired. Anyone who draft him in Round 1 deserves to be widely criticized by ownership and their team’s fan base.
The former Oregon star is nowhere near ready to take meaningful snaps in an NFL game. His collegiate tape shows him to be a very inconsistent passer. His footwork, in particular, is all over the place. Herbert will require extensive coaching at the next level to iron out those issues.
Even if his footwork gets fixed, he still lacks the elite arm strength to really be a top-flight NFL passer. Combine that with his mediocre accuracy and it’s difficult to see a path for him to become a really good starter. In 2018, Herbert failed to complete 60 percent of his passes, something that showcases his struggles at times.
The only real plus skill he showcases at the moment is his ability to make plays outside the pocket. His spindly frame isn’t well suited to take a ton of hits. Teams will have to be very careful about how many hits they allow him to take.
Herbert has some intriguing tools, but too many things have to go right for him to become a good NFL starter. That’s not something you should say about a potential top-10 pick. Herbert is slated to be the third quarterback off the board in a draft with two top-flight prospects in his position group.
Any general manager hitching their star to Herbert in this draft must be comfortable having his job status rely on that gamble. It’s not a smart wager for anyone to make.
