Early 2020-21 season preview

For as rough as this past year was for the Tar Heels, hot-take artists can save the “Roy Williams is done” takes for someone else. Yes, his team vastly underperformed but the head coach’s track record of success is too great to ignore. And even with some meaningful departures, he’ll have more than enough talent in the 2020-21 season to prove why he shouldn’t go anywhere.

Cole Anthony has stated that he will wait to make his decision regarding his NBA Draft future until later amidst the coronavirus outbreak — but it’s apparent the projected lottery pick is as good as gone. The bigger question will be if the two leading big men for North Carolina, Brooks and Bacot, choose to hang around for another year in Chapel Hill.

No matter what happens with the latter two and even with Brandon Robinson graduating, this team will be reloaded. UNC has the No. 3 ranked recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite rankings, a group led by two 5-star centers in Day’Ron Sharpe and Walker Kessler along with 5-star point guard Caleb Love.

With role players such as Leaky Black returning along with the return of Anthony Harris, who played in only five games before tearing his ACL, the Tar Heels should be deeper and more reliable — albeit while being younger — than the disappointing 2019-20 team.

It was undoubtedly a rough season to swallow for North Carolina basketball fans but don’t sleep on them in the 2020-21 season as a result as they’ll have the talent to make national noise once again.
