Georgia football: Modern-era Mount Rushmore – Herschel Walker and the Dawgs
By Nick Villano
Herschel Walker, running back
Herschel Walker is the greatest player to ever wear Georgia red. Walker joins Frank Sinkwich as the only winners of the Heisman Trophy, and Sinkwich won it before games were on television. Not only did he win the prestigious award, but he’s also one of only three players in history to be a finalist three different times. In 82, he beat out John Elway to finally win the award.
He rushed for 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns as a freshman. That helped lead the Bulldogs to their last National Championship and an undefeated season. The next season, his stats were even better. He rushed for more than 1,800 yards and 18 touchdowns. In three years at Georgia, Walker went an insane 33-3 while putting up insane numbers.
The other team knew the Bulldogs were going to rely on Walker to win games, and they still couldn’t stop him. During just three years in college, he set 11 NCAA records. We can’t put into words just how good he was. His rare ability to run past people and run through defenders was unmatched.
Of course, he’s best known now as the man on the other side of the trade that changed the Cowboys, but his college career is second to none. He may be the best player of the 80s, which is high praise. Even higher praise, Bleacher Report named him the best player in college football. Ever. ESPN ranks him second behind Jim Brown. That’s rarified air and something Bulldog fans should be proud of.
Not only is Walker on Georgia’s Mount Rushmore, but he’s on the College Football Mount Rushmore and there’s not much debate on that.
