2.  Give up a fifth-round pick for Andy Dalton

Bringing Dalton to Foxborough isn’t going to suddenly cause Patriots fans to forget about Brady, but he can help this offense continue to function at a reasonably high level. The only reason he’s headed out the door in Cincinnati is because the Bengals are prepared to hitch their wagon to Joe Burrow at quarterback.

His relatively high salary also means that Dalton can be had for relatively modest draft compensation. Bengals officials will try to start the bidding at a second round pick but no one is going to bite at that price. If the Patriots want until the draft they can have the former TCU star for the low price of a single fifth round draft pick.

Dalton happens to be a perfect quarterback to execute Belichick’s offense. He doesn’t have a huge arm, but he also won’t turn the football over if he receivers quality protection. The Patriots are going to run the ball a ton in 2020, they only need a quarterback to manage the offense and make important throws via play action. Those are Dalton’s strengths.

If the Patriots really want to make a postseason run next year they have to find a better quarterback. Dalton isn’t the sort of player that will win you a Super Bowl on his own, but he can get this team into the postseason. Anything can happen for Belichick in the playoffs.
