2. Draft Jordan Love

Love landed on the radar of NFL scouts with a strong 2018 season at Utah State (32 touchdowns, and six interceptions with seven rushing scores). But he struggled last season (20 touchdown passes and 17 interceptions), as a coaching staff change and a drop-off in talent around him created questions when he entered this year’s draft.

Assuming he doesn’t go higher (perhaps much higher), Love has been a fairly popular mock draft choice for the Patriots at No. 23 overall. The wide opinion is he would benefit from sitting for a year, and he could do that in New England behind Stidham and/or Hoyer while learning Josh McDaniels’ offense. If Stidham fails to meet expectations this year, Love could be ready to compete for the starting job or simply take over in 2021. In theory, if Stidham falls on his face, Love could step in before his rookie season is over.

Since they have such little cap space right now, the draft is the easiest path for the Patriots to add a quarterback this offseason. The choice doesn’t have to be Love, but his upside is tantalizing. A trade up to get him is surely an option for the Patriots, or any other team that may be inclined if he drops out of the top-10.
