Fantasy baseball: 2020 Colorado Rockies fantasy preview
By Mike Marteny
2020 Colorado Rockies projected starting rotation
Jon Gray, RHP (11-8, 3.84 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 150 K in 150 IP)
German Marquez, RHP (12-5, 4.76 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 175 K in 174 IP)
Kyle Freeland, LHP (3-11, 6.73 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 79 K in 104.1 IP)
Antonio Senzatela, RHP (11-11, 6.71 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, 76 K in 124.2 IP)
Jeff Hoffman, RHP (2-6, 6.56 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 68 K in 70 IP)
Wade Davis, RHP (1-6, 8.65 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 42 K, 15/18 saves in 42.2 IP)
You know the story with Rockies pitching. Marquez dominated on the road but struggled at Coors. That hampers his draft stock, but I don’t mind having him at the back of my rotation for use in road starts. Gray actually has reverse splits. He is the one Rockies pitcher who is better at Coors. Both Gray and Marquez offer strikeout upside, and if you use them in good situations, they are nice additions at the back of your fantasy rotation.
The other three slots could be fluid. Senzatela may get you some wins, but you aren’t making up that ERA and WHIP. I wouldn’t touch him. The same is true of Hoffman, and the spot may not even be his. However, Chi Chi Gonzalez, Peter Lambert, and former Rockies star Ubaldo Jimenez did nothing in the spring to take the job either. Leave all of this alone unless someone emerges.
The interesting one here is Freeland. He was a popular sleeper pick last year and fell off a cliff. Even after being exiled to the minors, Freeland continued to struggle. I don’t mind him in the last round or two as a stash, but last year could be who he really is. At any rate, Freeland has never been a high strikeout guy, so the upside is limited.
Davis had a historically bad season last year, and there’s a good chance that Scott Oberg takes the job. Oberg posted a 2.25 ERA despite a 1.34 ERA and picked up five saves in eight tries. Tyler Kinley also picked up a couple of saves without allowing a run in the spring. You have to be desperate to try this situation. Oberg is my top pick, but there’s no guarantee that Davis struggles and relinquishes the job again.
Prospects to watch:
Ashton Goudeau pitched well at AA Hartford last year and had a strong spring. Ben Bowden and Ryan Catellani are higher-rated prospects, but both struggled at AAA Albuquerque. You know the drill with Colorado pitchers though. Even the ones in the majors can’t be trusted. They would really have to be something special for you to take a shot on a rookie. None of them have that pedigree.
There are 21 more of these where this came from! Sports may be on hold, but we will have baseball sometime this season. We here at FanSided Fantasy are going to make sure you’re prepared!
