4) The departure of Tom Brady

The Dolphins were busy upgrading their roster for a push to the playoffs this offseason. But the move that could most decide their fate in the future was one they weren’t involved in.

When Tom Brady decided to leave the New England Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it left the AFC East as wide open as it’s been in nearly two decades. Brady and the Patriots have won the division every year since 2003, except one, in 2008 when Brady missed almost all of the season.

The Dolphins won the division that season, their last division title and the last time a team other than New England finished atop the East. Miami has finished second to New England six times since 2001. They’ve made the playoffs three times since Brady took over the Patriots and only once in the last decade.

Brady’s departure for the NFC South, though, leaves the Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets believing they can be the ones to finally end New England’s dominance. The Bills and Jets have something the Dolphins don’t, a franchise quarterback in Josh Allen and Sam Darnold, respectively.

That’s where Tagovailoa steps in. The addition of a quarterback with Tagovailoa’s ability would make the Dolphins contenders in the AFC East not only in 2020 but for years to come now that they don’t have Brady to deal with.
