While the NHL continues to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and brainstorm solutions once things return to normal, the league’s youngest franchise may have some good news on the way.

In a recent article about how the NHL is dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, The Athletic‘s Pierre LeBrun stated that NHL Seattle may be close to deciding on a name.

According to LeBrun, the organization has been busy filing through trademarks and the legal side of things, but is closing on their reveal date. He also speculates that the organization may wait until North America makes it through the pandemic before making any announcements.

It’s understandable for the franchise to want to wait until things return to normal to make this announcement. The worst thing a brand could do is come off as tone-deaf during this time and there are certainly more pressing matters at hand.

However, we’ve talked here about how this is actually the perfect moment to announce such news. The sporting world is in a standstill right now and this provides NHL Seattle with an opportunity to emerge as a feel-good story in the midst of a crisis.

With no real idea as to when hockey will resume, or even when things will start to return to the way they were, this is the type of lighthearted story that could bring a flicker of joy to fans.

It also allows a moment of escape as fans can direct the conversation away from trying times we find ourselves in and towards speculation surrounding the team, branding and expansion draft. The organization already had some fun with fans on Twitter after feeding into the Kraken rumors earlier this season. Something similar to that could help break up the current news cycle and bring some levity back into the social media feed.

Whether or not we get the Seattle Kraken name we all want, it’s exciting think fans may be just a short time away from meeting the league’s newest club.

Next. NHL Seattle should consider a name other than Kraken. dark
