2020 NFL Draft: 5 players Packers could take in Round 1
3. Jordan Love, QB, Utah State
Love has drawn unrealistic comparisons to Patrick Mahomes. But leaving that out, he’s a tantalizing prospect with size (6-foot-4, 224 pounds), mobility and arm strength to garner attention and projection in mock drafts as a potential top-10 pick.
Love put himself on the NFL radar with an outstanding 2018 season at Utah State, when threw for 3,567 yards with 32 touchdown passes against just six interceptions. But a coaching staff change and a bunch of new starters around him helped bring a drop-off last year, with 20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions along with notable drops in yards per attempt and adjusted yards per attempt.
The wide opinion on Love is he’d benefit from spending his rookie season on the bench, as he makes the leap from the Mountain West to the NFL. The Packers are among the teams who have had a virtual meeting with him during this unique pre-draft process, so they are doing some due diligence if he happens to fall.
If Love isn’t available, the Packers may still set aside more immediate needs and take a quarterback in the first round. But the opportunity to take him at No. 30 is out there, since there will almost surely be a quarterback who falls further than expected in the first round. Simply put, it will be hard to turn down drafting the quarterback in this year’s class with the highest ceiling this side of Tua Tagovailoa if he’s available.
