Fantasy baseball: 2020 Los Angeles Angels fantasy preview
By Mike Marteny
2020 Los Angeles Angels projected starting rotation
Julio Teheran, RHP (10-11, 3.81 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 162 K in 174.2 IP with ATL)
Andrew Heaney, LHP (4-6, 4.91 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 118 K in 95.1 IP)
Dylan Bundy, RHP (7-14, 4.79 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 162 K in 161.2 IP with BAL)
Matt Andriese, RHP (5-5, 4.71 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 79 K in 70.2 IP with ARI)
Griffin Canning, RHP (5-6. 4.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 96 K in 90.1 IP)
Hansel Robles, RHP (5-1, 2.48 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 23/27 saves, 75 K in 72.2 IP)
This is a revamped pitching staff, but how much better is it? At least Teheran wont have to face Rendon anymore. Teheran’s numbers are decent enough to run him at the back of your rotation, but Heaney is the real wild card here. He has always had elite strikeout totals but has had issues with runners getting on base. That didn’t change last year. I like Heaney in the middle of drafts because he’s still getting better, but he’s a risk whenever you decide to take him.
Bundy moving out of the A.L. East should help, but his numbers outside of the division weren’t great either. Getting out of Camden Yards, where he has a 4.49 career ERA, could help. However, he has a 7.64 ERA in three starts at the Big A. Don’t get too alarmed. That’s facing a really good lineup and too small of a sample size. I would be willing to gamble on Bundy at the end of drafts, but I have a feeling that what you see is what you get with Bundy at this stage of his career.
Canning was solid as a rookie last year. I’m not sure that I would take him over Heaney, but I could make a case for taking him over anyone else in this rotation aside from that. If anyone fades, Felix Pena could get a few starts. He had a nice 1.18 WHIP last year, but the ERA was still 4.58.
Robles pitched very well as the closer here last year. Given the win potential for this lineup, Robles could get a good number of save opportunities and has good numbers across the board. He’s a great second closer for you fantasy baseball team.
Prospects to watch:
Andriese is likely just keeping the rotation spot warm for Patrick Sandoval unless Bundy has a horrible year. Bundy, Andriese, and Dillon Peters all had strong springs, so I don’t see Sandoval claiming that spot just yet. Sandoval did struggle in the majors last year, but he looked pretty good this spring.
There are 20 more of these where this came from! Sports may be on hold, but we will have baseball sometime this season. We here at FanSided Fantasy are going to make sure you’re prepared!
