3. Randall Cobb will get benched

Trading Hopkins away was an exceedingly poor decision by O’Brien. Following that up by giving Cobb a three-year deal worth up to $27 million defies all logical explanation.

The move is going to backfire on the team pretty quickly. They’ll start the season with Cobb as their starter in the slot, but he’s not better than the options they had left on their roster from last season. Keke Coutee is going to take his job before the season hits the halfway point.

When he does, it’s going to shine an even brighter light on O’Brien’s pitiful record as a GM. The worst part of the Cobb deal is that it’s going to get even worse as time goes along. If it looks bad in 2020 it’s going to look hideous in 2022.

The only hope Cobb has of staying relevant is that Watson is a good enough quarterback to cover up all of his flaws. If he produces, O’Brien might be willing to stick with him over Coutee just to save face. This is a classic example of the problem of having a head coach be your GM.
