2020 NFL Draft position rankings: Top 10 quarterbacks – Burrow, Tua sure-fire studs
4. Justin Herbert, Oregon
Herbert was projected to be a first-rounder if he entered the 2019 NFL Draft but decided to return to Oregon for his senior season. As the season began, Herbert was up with Tagovailoa in terms of the top quarterback prospects in the draft class. He’s also expected to go in the top-10.
So why is he fourth on this list? Herbert really isn’t that far behind Love in terms of grading.
There were a couple of main questions surrounding Herbert by the middle of the season. Teams were questioning his leadership skills. Herbert quelled those with a gutty Rose Bowl performance and a great showing in Mobile for the Senior Bowl. The other was whether Herbert has the “it” factor or killer instinct, and that can come down to personality at times, so it’s an unfair question.
As a prospect, Herbert has a lot to offer. He has one of the top arms in the class, with the ability to push the ball vertically and made throws look easy outside the hashes. Herbert has the arm talent to make throws on the move with ease and doesn’t lose power or accuracy on the ball (in fact, some of his best throws on tape are on the move). He’s a great athlete who can test defenses on the ground.
The only real questions for Herbert are his sporadic accuracy, which comes from mechanical issues, mostly how he steps with his front foot and open his hips. There are also a couple of issues with decision-making where he doesn’t come off his first read. Still, Herbert is a good prospect in the class.
