Fantasy football 2020 AFC North depth chart breakdowns
By Bill Pivetz
RBs: James Conner, Jaylen Samuels
WRs: JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington, Diontae Johnson
TEs: Eric Ebron, Vance McDonald
The Steelers had a rough offseason last year, losing Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell. They also were without their starting quarterback for 14 games. Yet, they still finished 8-8, second in the division. With the team expected to be 100 percent this season, the fantasy values for their stars are on the rise.
Roethlisberger underwent elbow surgery and is expected to be ready for week 1. If we look at his last full season in 2018, he was at his best. Big Ben threw for his first 5,000-yard season, 5,129 yards specifically, with 34 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. I don’t expect him to get back to that yardage total but 4,500 yards, 30 touchdowns and 15 picks make him a back-end top-20 quarterback.
Regarding the running back situation, many experts expect the Steelers to draft another running back to compete with Conner. All of their rushers combined for 290 carries, 1,065 yards and seven touchdowns. Having one guy to do all of the work helps fantasy owners, but coaches don’t care about that. This is going to be a battle to watch all preseason.
The wide receiver group also struggled last season. Johnson led the team with 59 receptions and five touchdowns. Washington led with 735 yards. Smith-Schuster disappointed owners with a 42/552/3 stat line. With Roethlisberger back under center, I expect him to bounce back in a great way.
To help the offense, the Pittsburgh front office brought in Ebron. He followed up his 13-touchdown season in 2018 with three touchdowns in 11 games. It does help now that he’s away from the battle with Jack Doyle in Indianapolis. However, McDonald caught 38 passes last year. Depending on how Ebron recovers from his ankle injury, we may see more of McDonald this season.
Every team in this division has talent at most of the positions. Some teams are more stacked than others but it’ll make the AFC North a fun division to watch this season. The next division up is the AFC South.
