2020 is the year the Bills need to assert their dominance and win the AFC East for the first time in two decades. The Miami Dolphins are rebuilding, but could be a very different team in terms of overall perception by this time next year. The New York Jets might be better than expected, but could underwhelm again like they always tend to do. And then, there’s the New England Patriots.

No team has owned the Bills for the last two decades quite like the Patriots. The Tom Brady/Bill Belichick era eviscerated Buffalo almost twice annually. But now that Brady is gone, this is the Bills’ time to strike. No, this doesn’t mean going into Foxborough and beating the Patriots at Gillette. Let’s start small with, I don’t know, beating the Patriots at home in Orchard Park, please.

Though it remains to be seen how good the Patriots can be with presumably Jarrett Stidham at quarterback, if the Bills want to win the AFC East, they can’t drop both games to the Patriots by any stretch of the imagination. Splitting with Miami wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, but getting swept by the Patriots allows New England a little sliver needed to stay alive in the division.

Because the Bills have the superior roster over the Patriots and that the Bills a playing a second-place schedule and not a first-place schedule like the Patriots, they have the upper hand at winning the division at this time. A win at home over New England will serve as the ultimate tone setter for a new era of Bills football and their arrival in the AFC East in the 2020s.
